7 Remarkable Listening Bars Where Design is Perfectly Tuned

In an age of constant noise and endless playlists, listening bars are emerging as quiet revolutions. These intimate, design-led spaces invite us to slow down, sit back, and truly listen, not as background entertainment, but as a carefully curated experience. Rooted in vinyl culture and elevated by thoughtful interiors, listening bars are redefining how music is consumed, felt, and shared.

More than just places to enjoy a drink, these venues are architectural soundscapes, where acoustics, lighting, furniture, and materiality work in perfect harmony. Warm woods, tactile fabrics, and precisely crafted pieces play a fundamental role in shaping an atmosphere where sound becomes immersive and deeply emotional. Every detail matters, from the height of a chair to the surface of a table, because comfort and design directly influence the way we listen.

This renewed appreciation for craftsmanship and intentional design mirrors the philosophy behind Wood Tailors Club. Much like a finely tuned sound system, tailor-made furniture brings balance, character, and precision to a space. In listening bars, bespoke pieces are not decorative afterthoughts; they are essential elements that frame the experience, grounding technology with warmth and human touch.

In this article, we explore seven listening bars from around the world where design and music are perfectly tuned. Each space offers a unique interpretation of how interiors can elevate sound and how furniture, materials, and craftsmanship help create environments meant not just to be seen, but truly heard.

JAM Record Bar, Australia, by Akin Atelier

Inspired by Tokyo’s legendary listening bars, Owner Justin Hemmes and designer Kelvin Ho of Akin Atelier transformed a compact Sydney space into the audaciously playful JAM Record Bar, drenched in hot pink. The bar is carefully composed around a central hub, creating distinct listening zones that invite guests to explore, linger, and truly absorb the music.

Every material was deliberately chosen to enhance the acoustic experience: fibreglass insulation panels in vibrant pink, sound-absorbing cork, and built-in plywood shelving that houses an impressive library of 15,000 records. The attention to detail ensures that every corner of the bar contributes to both sound quality and visual impact.

“JAM is designed to feel like you’re enjoying a cocktail inside a giant speaker box, but pink,” explains Ho. The result is a space where design, color, and acoustics merge into an unforgettable sensory experience, a philosophy not unlike that of Wood Tailors Club, where bespoke materials and craftsmanship elevate furniture into experiential art.

Upstairs, USA, by Shane Davis and Francis Harris

In Brooklyn, the founders of Public Records, Shane Davis and Francis Harris, transformed the upper floor of their “music-driven social space” into Upstairs, a refined listening bar and lounge designed for immersive sound experiences.

Undulating walls skillfully bounce music from large subwoofer speakers, creating an intimate yet dynamic auditory environment. Guests settle into cream leather banquettes or on sleek black ceramic and foam stools, selecting from a curated library of records and CDs.

Every surface and material was chosen not only for comfort but for the way it shapes sound, echoing the philosophy of Wood Tailors Club, where bespoke furniture balances form, function, and sensory engagement.

The space feels both relaxed and meticulously crafted, a sanctuary where music, design, and tactile materials converge to create an elevated listening experience.

Space Talk, UK, by EBBA Architects and Charlotte Taylor

In London’s Clerkenwell, EBBA Architects teamed up with British designer Charlotte Taylor to craft Space Talk, a hi-fi listening bar where sound and design coalesce into an immersive journey.

The space is organized into four distinct zones, each offering a curated interplay of music and lighting, guiding visitors to move through the bar over the course of an evening, a signature approach found in the most thoughtfully designed listening bars. Vintage furniture and eclectic objects mingle with acoustic panelling and woodblock columns, creating a tactile and atmospheric interior that feels both deliberate and inviting.

Every element contributes to the experience, from the warmth of timber surfaces to the careful positioning of seating, reflecting the care and precision that define premium listening bars. Space Talk exemplifies how interiors can shape the way we hear and feel music, making each visit a multisensory exploration of sound, light, and texture, the essence of what makes listening bars truly exceptional.

Bar Ton, Romania, by Anda Zota and Muromuro Studio

In Bucharest, local designers Anda Zota and Muromuro Studio transformed a former music shop on the ground floor of a communist-era apartment block into Bar Ton, a hi-fi listening bar where music takes centre stage, both physically and conceptually.

The designers preserved the building’s marble mosaic floors and four concrete pillars, inserting birch plywood shelving between two of them to house records, while a timber unit between the other pair accommodates the main DJ booth. This thoughtful arrangement maintains the open-plan character of the space while creating distinct zones that enhance both listening and movement, hallmarks of well-considered listening bars.

“The overarching concept was about putting the music at the centre, both physically and conceptually,” explained Zota. Bar Ton is a subtle celebration of sound, architecture, and historical context, blending modern functionality with the heritage of its location to create a focused, immersive listening environment, the kind of experience that defines the best listening bars.

Goodbye Horses, UK, by Leopold Banchini Architects

In London’s De Beauvoir Town, architect Leopold Banchini has transformed a traditional pub into Goodbye Horses, one of the city’s most distinctive listening bars, where music, materials, and atmosphere converge into a singular, immersive experience.

The space is anchored by a ten-metre-long oak bar, crafted from a single century-old tree, its natural grain and imperfections left visible, a testament to the beauty of authentic materials and meticulous craftsmanship. Surrounding it, walls of limewashed brick, hand-textured plaster ceilings, and beaten-earth floors create a warm, tactile environment that subtly shapes acoustics and enhances the sense of intimacy, a hallmark of carefully designed listening bars.

Every detail, from volcanic stone and oxidised brass accents to textured finishes inspired by Japanese wabi-sabi, is intentionally curated to elevate the sensory experience. In listening bars like Goodbye Horses, sound, sight, and touch are inseparable, allowing guests to fully inhabit the music as they would a work of art.

This listening bar exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform a space into an experience of refined presence, where every material, surface, and proportion contributes to the pleasure of truly listening, the essence of what makes listening bars exceptional.

Anima, Germany, by Grzywinski+Pons

In Berlin, the New York architecture studio Grzywinski+Pons designed Anima, a restaurant and audiophile listening bar located on the ground floor of the Locke at East Side Gallery hotel. Created as a dedicated space for music lovers, Anima balances functionality with a warm, tactile atmosphere, inviting guests to slow down and fully immerse themselves in sound.

The interior features a rich palette of natural materials, with locally sourced bricks made from recycled sand and lime forming built-in seating and planters. Large sandy-hued speakers flank homely white shelving stacked with records, creating a subtle but powerful dialogue between design and acoustics. This careful orchestration of materials, light, and layout exemplifies how listening bars can merge aesthetic refinement with an elevated auditory experience.

Anima demonstrates that, in well-conceived listening bars, every detail, from surfaces to spatial arrangement, contributes to the ritual of listening, transforming music into a fully immersive, sensory journey.

Whether it’s the bold vibrancy of JAM Record Bar, the refined zones of Space Talk, or the tactile warmth of Anima, every detail contributes to the ritual of listening, showing that design can elevate music into a profound, intimate experience.

For enthusiasts and designers alike, these listening bars are a reminder that the perfect auditory environment is achieved not only through speakers and records, but through materials, furniture, and spatial composition, elements that together define the essence of modern, design-led listening bars.

Not Too Much, Not Too Little: Designing with Lagom Interior Style

Lagom Interior Style

Wood is never rushed, it’s shaped by time, guided by hand, and born from intention. Each creation moves at its own pace, not merely occupying space, but defining its feeling.

Lagom Interior Style transcends minimalism. It is about presence, the right material, placed thoughtfully, at precisely the right moment.

The Aesthetic of Enough: A Palette That Calms

In Lagom interiors, materials speak quietly but with conviction. Wood is chosen not just for beauty but for longevity, its surface revealing a history of slow growth and careful craftsmanship.

The palette is soft and neutral: creamy whites, deep charcoal, and muted pastels emphasizing harmony over contrast. Paired with brushed brass, stone, and natural textiles, furniture is felt as much as seen, the solid weight, smooth edges, and earthy scent of natural finishes.

This thoughtful combination of colours and materials creates interiors that feel both inviting and uncluttered, where every elements invites a moment of quiet appreciation.
