Tom Dixon: The Self-Taught Designer
Tom Dixon was born in Tunisia in 1959, after moving to London. But contrary to what many people imagine, Dixon is not graduated in Design. He went to Chelsea Art School for a short period of 6 months, but after a motorcycle accident he did not continue the course.
That was when Dixon decided to venture into other forms of expression. In 1981 he decided to play bass in a band and also to learn how to weld objects by himself. He spent 2 years as a musician until another motorcycle accident interrupted his plans again.

Self-taught, the designer took advantage of his knowledge in welding objects and began to explore your decorative and structural potential of recycled materials and industrial scrap. Connecting different aspects and projections of environments.

Berkeley Bar & Terrace : Why This Is “The Bar”
The Berkeley Bar & Terrace is the newest bar at The Berkeley hotel London. Opened last July, this bar comes to complement the Blue Bar that has welcomed the five-star hotel’s guests since 2000.
Located between Knightsbridge and Belgravia, The Berkeley hotel, founded in 1867, hosts clients worldwide for more than 100 years. Within the central London, its clients belongs to the upper class.
This luxury hotel forms part of the Maybourne Hotel Group with Claridge‘s and The Connaught in Mayfair.
Designed by the Scottish interior designer Bryan O’Sulllivan, The Berkeley Bar & Terrace dresses half of its walls with wood from The Fulbeck tree. This walnut tree with more than 400 years old fell in 2007 during the great storm. Coral, cream and pink tones accompany the brown and white tones of the walls in form of decoration and furniture.
There is a particular room appropriated for little reunion up to 9 guests inside.
The snug reminds the traditional snugs back where women would use that private room to socialize without men’s judgement. It’s also transcripted in the decoration of the room which is more cosy and the tones are more feminine. Plus, there’s a mural by the New York-based artist TM Davy covering the wall depicting several women expressions.

London House Tour: Functionality, Light and Natural Materials by Echlin

The design and development firm, Echlin, has remodeled a entire London house in Knightsbridge. Through a project that is a “reinterpretation” of a classic London stables house. With functionalism, flexibility, lots of natural light and natural materials.
Located in a quiet place near to Hyde Park, the 225 square meter London house is spread over three floors. And connected by an handcrafted oak staircase.
In this London house entrance, the ground floor features an hall molded in gray Pietra marble. Which is separated from a large living room, dining area and office divided from an open and sliding shelving system.
The Dining Area
Each room follows a “broken plan” layout, in which built-in furniture and level changes help to freely demarcate different areas. The dining table features our George Dining Chair in combination with a planned bench fixed to the wall.
According to the Echlin Architect Chief, Steve Clinch, the project aimed to transform the space that was previously small and closed. Into a contemporary London house with a great sense of space.
For this, the company tried to open the entire floor plan of the London house. From wide sliding doors, which made it possible to have a view between the spaces of the house. Creating a sense of spaciousness in the width and length of this London house.
In the small office the bespoke joinery, as the open shelves divide the dining, office and living areas on the first floor.
On the ground floor, there is a lowered seating area in order to create a visual separation, allowing the spaces to remain connected to each other. The walnut kitchen was designed by Echlin so that all utilities can be hidden behind revolving doors when the owners are entertaining.
The ceiling with skylight
Three bedrooms are located on the first floor, where the sloping ceilings create a sense of space. While the skylights ensure that the spaces receive plenty of daylight.
The entry of light in these environments is also helped by the fully retractable floor-to-ceiling glass door. That leads to a small terrace and frames the view of the green wall.

Martyn Lawrence CAREER START:
Martyn Lawrence started his career by collecting and reselling design objects when he was just a teenager, that’s how he learned to identify decorator items that were valuable or well-designed. Ilse Crawford: The Art of Design

Ilse Crawford is a British designer, academic and creative director with a simple mission to put human needs and desires at the center of all that she does.
Although often described as an interior designer, Crawford’s portfolio contains projects ranging from a secluded garden for a Hong Kong restaurant to the conversion of a 100-year-old house in Stockholm into a boutique hotel.
Ilse Crawford started her career as a journalist and at only 27 she became the editor of Elle Decoration UK. After over a decade in magazines, with a mission to put human needs and desires back at the center of the design, she founded her multi-disciplinary practice Studioilse in 2001, which is her main business.
“Working for a magazine gave me a real on-the-ground education, an insight into what is actually successful. I saw so much new that I began to prioritize what would last and connect. I am still interested in the new, but I am also concerned about the relevant.”
“As the head of Studioilse, I mostly design interiors. But, in fact, we do a lot more than that here” Crawford said for Dezeen Magazine.
“Because, I think, interiors are ultimately where we live, they are a lot more than pieces of furniture. They’re really about the interior life, how we live as human beings.” In other words, it means designing furniture and products that support and enhance human behavior and actions in everyday life.
Crawford is the founder of the department of Man and Well-Being at the prestigious Design Academy Eindhoven. Her mission extends to nurturing a new generation of students to always question why and how their work improves the reality of life.
She designed the Soho House club in New York, Babington House, the Electric Cinema, and the Hong Kong restaurant Duddell’s, as well as pieces for Georg Jensen.

It’s not a traditional restaurant & bar. Nor an art gallery. And it’s much more than an exclusive members’ club. Indeed, it’s a place where you pay a lot of money to be a part of, if you’re lucky to get in, since there is a massive waiting list. Despite Duddell’s undeniable opulence and grandeur, Crawford took her signature humanistic approach to design, where people are placed at the centre of the project.

Alexa Hampton: The Designer Who Inherited Mark Hampton
The interior designer Alexa Hampton is daughter of the legendary designer Mark Hampton. The designer that designed interiors for icons like Estée Lauder, Brooke Astor, H. John Heinz III.
