London House Tour: Functionality, Light and Natural Materials by Echlin

The design and development firm, Echlin, has remodeled a entire London house in Knightsbridge. Through a project that is a “reinterpretation” of a classic London stables house. With functionalism, flexibility, lots of natural light and natural materials.
Located in a quiet place near to Hyde Park, the 225 square meter London house is spread over three floors. And connected by an handcrafted oak staircase.
In this London house entrance, the ground floor features an hall molded in gray Pietra marble. Which is separated from a large living room, dining area and office divided from an open and sliding shelving system.
The Dining Area
Each room follows a “broken plan” layout, in which built-in furniture and level changes help to freely demarcate different areas. The dining table features our George Dining Chair in combination with a planned bench fixed to the wall.
According to the Echlin Architect Chief, Steve Clinch, the project aimed to transform the space that was previously small and closed. Into a contemporary London house with a great sense of space.
For this, the company tried to open the entire floor plan of the London house. From wide sliding doors, which made it possible to have a view between the spaces of the house. Creating a sense of spaciousness in the width and length of this London house.
In the small office the bespoke joinery, as the open shelves divide the dining, office and living areas on the first floor.
On the ground floor, there is a lowered seating area in order to create a visual separation, allowing the spaces to remain connected to each other. The walnut kitchen was designed by Echlin so that all utilities can be hidden behind revolving doors when the owners are entertaining.
The ceiling with skylight
Three bedrooms are located on the first floor, where the sloping ceilings create a sense of space. While the skylights ensure that the spaces receive plenty of daylight.
The entry of light in these environments is also helped by the fully retractable floor-to-ceiling glass door. That leads to a small terrace and frames the view of the green wall.
Sliding Doors Lead To The Bathroom
The sliding doors in the master bedroom create a visual connection from the dressing area to the master bathroom.
Built-in and Bespoke Furniture
Many of the furniture in this London house were designed by Echlin and made in collaboration with a network of qualified craftsmen. According to the studio, the feeling of calm and tranquility of this London house was created through the use of natural materials, organic textures and a palette of soft colors. Meanwhile, the use of metal surfaces and traditional colors point to the historic location of the house.
Due to the current world situation and to the fact that we are at home for longer. The Projects tendency is to have a focus on the man. Through comfortable, practical environments and using natural materials to benefit the occupant’s space well-being.

Martyn Lawrence Bullard is a well known interior designer in the celebrities’ world, because of his sense of décor in famous mansions. Eccentricity is one of his strengths. That’s why he has a strong clientele like famous singers like Elton John, Cher and Christina Aguilera and successful actors like Eva Mendes, Edward Norton and Ellen Pompeo, the couple Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, and stylist Tommy Hilfiger, among others.
Martyn Lawrence CAREER START:
Martyn Lawrence started his career by collecting and reselling design objects when he was just a teenager, that’s how he learned to identify decorator items that were valuable or well-designed. Later he moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. And in this meantime, Bullard was cast in several roles, including a part as Eartha Kitt’s boy toy in Ed Wood’s final film and I Woke Up Early The Day I Died. One of the film’s producers visited Martyn’s house, and, impressed by its decor, invited Bullard to decorate his office.
From there, Martyn Lawrence was hired to decorate the office and home of Liz Heller, and was eventually asked to help create Heller’s wedding to producer John Bard Manulis. And after these projects he received other interior design orders to decorate celebrity residences, when he really started working in this area.
PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION:
Since then, he become one of the most sought-after interior designer constantly highlighted. As a result he had his name listed on List A of Elle Decor, AD100.
In addition, Martyn Lawrence got a place on the top 25 designers by The Hollywood Reporter. And also, he won an Andrew Martin International Interior Designer of the Year in 2010.

Ilse Crawford is a British designer, academic and creative director with a simple mission to put human needs and desires at the center of all that she does.
Although often described as an interior designer, Crawford’s portfolio contains projects ranging from a secluded garden for a Hong Kong restaurant to the conversion of a 100-year-old house in Stockholm into a boutique hotel.
Ilse Crawford started her career as a journalist and at only 27 she became the editor of Elle Decoration UK. After over a decade in magazines, with a mission to put human needs and desires back at the center of the design, she founded her multi-disciplinary practice Studioilse in 2001, which is her main business.
“Working for a magazine gave me a real on-the-ground education, an insight into what is actually successful. I saw so much new that I began to prioritize what would last and connect. I am still interested in the new, but I am also concerned about the relevant.”
“As the head of Studioilse, I mostly design interiors. But, in fact, we do a lot more than that here” Crawford said for Dezeen Magazine.
“Because, I think, interiors are ultimately where we live, they are a lot more than pieces of furniture. They’re really about the interior life, how we live as human beings.” In other words, it means designing furniture and products that support and enhance human behavior and actions in everyday life.
Crawford is the founder of the department of Man and Well-Being at the prestigious Design Academy Eindhoven. Her mission extends to nurturing a new generation of students to always question why and how their work improves the reality of life.

Berkeley Bar & Terrace : Why This Is “The Bar”
The Berkeley Bar & Terrace is the newest bar at The Berkeley hotel London. Opened last July, this bar comes to complement the Blue Bar that has welcomed the five-star hotel’s guests since 2000.
Located between Knightsbridge and Belgravia, The Berkeley hotel, founded in 1867, hosts clients worldwide for more than 100 years. Within the central London, its clients belongs to the upper class.
This luxury hotel forms part of the Maybourne Hotel Group with Claridge‘s and The Connaught in Mayfair.
Designed by the Scottish interior designer Bryan O’Sulllivan, The Berkeley Bar & Terrace dresses half of its walls with wood from The Fulbeck tree. This walnut tree with more than 400 years old fell in 2007 during the great storm. Coral, cream and pink tones accompany the brown and white tones of the walls in form of decoration and furniture.
There is a particular room appropriated for little reunion up to 9 guests inside.
The snug reminds the traditional snugs back where women would use that private room to socialize without men’s judgement. It’s also transcripted in the decoration of the room which is more cosy and the tones are more feminine. For the first time on AD100 Beata Heuman is a london designer that combines Scandinavian design features with a family aesthetic. What results in very refreshing interiors. After working closely for years with the giant designer Nicky Haslam, Heuman opened her own design studio.
Her studio takes a totally immersive approach. Her designs have a playful nature, however, her attention to detail is fantastic. And the future promises to be even brighter for Heuman and her studio. As next year, she will launch a book with her tailored interiors.
Clements Design
Kathleen and Tommy Clements are the creators of Clements Design that features this year on AD100. It’s powerful interior design company that focuses on designing layered and highly cured residential projects. Their projects go from Neo-Paladian villas to modern mansions.
The mother and son team worked with some of Hollywood’s best stars, including Jennifer Lawrence, Bruno Mars and Adam Levine. Their projects come for the simple, which reinforces the concept ‘‘ don’t think too much ’’.
Kéré Architecture
Francis Kéré first gained prominence when his architecture office was distinguished with the esteemed Aga Khan Architecture Award in 2004. This award was for his first project, a school in Burkina Faso wich he was able to design in collaboration with Gando native residents.
Other of his projects are the doctors’ homes in Burkina Faso, the Obama Legacy Campus in Kegalo and the Beijing Pavilion. Besides this his next projects will be a secondary school in his hometown of Gando, as well as a memorial to former President Thomas Sankara in Ouagadougou.
WHY Architecture
WHY Architecture is a multidisciplinary company best known for its innovative character. The company works through holistic and sustainable projects, giving a new concept to contemporary culture. Having Kulapat Yantrasast as the creative director.

Her diverse work ranges from modernism to Memphis in her interior projects and furniture, fabrics and lighting lines.
Ashe Leandro
This New York company makes its mark in the design world with personalized and relaxed interiors. By the creative duo A + L founded exactly 10 years ago. Tom Dixon was born in Tunisia in 1959, after moving to London. But contrary to what many people imagine, Dixon is not graduated in Design. He went to Chelsea Art School for a short period of 6 months, but after a motorcycle accident he did not continue the course.
That was when Dixon decided to venture into other forms of expression. In 1981 he decided to play bass in a band and also to learn how to weld objects by himself. He spent 2 years as a musician until another motorcycle accident interrupted his plans again.

Self-taught, the designer took advantage of his knowledge in welding objects and began to explore your decorative and structural potential of recycled materials and industrial scrap. Connecting different aspects and projections of environments.

Later, in 1977, he founded the “Piano & Rice” studio together with Peter Rice, a professional personality who had worked with Renzo Piano on many projects. The partnership continued until his partner death in 1992.

During the first years of his career, Marcio divided the activity of architecture with cinema, in partnerships with Isay Weinfeld, his college colleague. In 1988, the duo produced the feature film Fogo e Paixão and, between 1995 and 2004, held 5 exhibitions on architecture and humor together.
